June Nanaimo Fishing Charters Report

With the 1st of June arriving brings the opening for Coho salmon in the Georgia straight. Coho are now open for hatchery retention only which means they’ve had their adipose fin removed. On our latest Nanaimo fishing charters this June, we have been getting into good numbers of these smaller but strong fighting fish. The size is about average for this time of year but with how fast these fish grow, they will be getting bigger by the week. The ratio of hatchery to wild really varies trip to trip and day by day. Some days it may be close to 50/50, other times 25/75 where you catch a lot of wild coho for every hatchery one. It’s good to see strong numbers of coho salmon around again this year as last year was phenomenal for their populations in the Straight. Our fishing charters in Nanaimo have been focusing on the coho fishing so we haven’t been targeting chinook salmon much, but we are still catching some nice ones while trolling for coho.
